Ever since Jenny McCarthy’s son Evan was diagnosed with autism in 2007, she’s been the public face of the disorder, founding an organization to the cause, writing about it in books, and stridently
slamming vaccines as a potential cause. But in a new interview with Time magazine, McCarthy is changing her tune. Evan, who no longer shows signs of autism, may not actually have the disorder after all. And with that in mind, the host of The View says she is changing her long-held stance on vaccines.
“Evan couldn’t talk; now he talks,” McCarthy told Time of her son’s transformation. “Evan couldn’t make eye contact; now he makes eye contact. Evan was anti-social; now he makes friends. It was amazing to watch …”
Since autism symptoms rarely go away with age, the article suggests Evan has Landau-Kleffner syndrome, “a rare childhood neurological disorder that can also result in speech impairment and in possible long-term neurological damage.”
But whatever his diagnosis, McCarthy insists, “I’ll continue to be the voice” of autism.
Even more shocking however, is the fact that she is voicing a new opinion about vaccines. For years, McCarthy has been very vocal about her controversial belief that MMR vaccines cause autism. But now, she says in the article, she simply wants them to be better-researched, not banned outright.
