Weighted Vest for Autism

Have you heard that weighted clothing can help your child deal with the day-to-day challenges of autism spectrum disorder or sensory processing disorder? Weighted vests are one way that children with autism, who often respond well to deep pressure, can receive the sensory input they need.

How can weighted clothing help my child?

Weighted and compression vests are designed to give your child that hugged sensation, without the trapped feeling some kids with autism can experience with a person-to-person hug.

Weighted clothing and accessories can help your child feel calm and secure, as well as manage anxiety and behavioral troubles like meltdowns and temper tantrums. Using weighted items can also improve concentration on tasks and in school.

Weighted vests and other weighted apparel provide wearers with proprioceptive feedback — in other words, it gives them a sense of where where their limbs and trunk are in space. These items can be used in conjunction with other sensory integration therapies to improve joint approximation, gait training, balancing and strengthening.

How much should a vest weigh in order to receive the benefits?

A good rule of thumb is that a vest’s weight should equal about 5% of your child’s body weight. Some vests feature removable weights or additional weights, so you can make adjustments as your child’s needs change or as he or she grows. Be sure to check with your occupational therapist or other professional to determine the right weight for your child.

Are there alternatives to vests?

We have other weighted and compression options that provide many of the same benefits. Don’t miss our weighted headbands, hats, wrist weights, compression sleeves and even cuddly companions.
